Accused Prateek Gupta remanded to police custody for 3 days

Arrested in Delhi and brought to city on Monday, Prateek Gupta, 35, was remanded to police custody for three days following a district court order issued on Monday.
Gupta, a professional, staying in the US, is an accused under Sections 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust), 379, 498A, 3 and 4 of IPC. The complainant has been fighting the case since past five years.

What is the case?
Prateek Gupta married Veebha, 31, in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on April 21, 2014. The couple stayed together for seven months in Delaware, US. During their stay, Veebha accused him for abusing her physically and causing mental torture.
While she did not lodge complaint of domestic violence, her neighbours informed 911 emergency services several times and their house was put on red alert.
 Veebha took up a job at a university of Texas in Dallas to escape domestic violence. After that, she never returned to her husband’s home. As she had not taken her jewellery along, the gold jewellery worth Rs 11 lakh was kept by Gupta and not returned till date. Though the divorce was filed in 2015, there was no verdict. However, Gupta got an ex-party divorce decree from Bulandshahar, UP.
Meanwhile, he married another woman from Punjab. Veebha came to know about his second marriage without divorce through her social media campaign against him.
Latest updates of case
Senior Superintendent of Police Ruchi Vardhan Mishra issued a lookout circular against Gupta in June second week on the basis of charges. Parents of accused had applied for anticipatory bail on June 21, which was granted.
On June 25, the accused applied for anticipatory bail. Based on arguments of complainant, his bail was rejected. Accused visited India for his brother’s wedding. Based on lookout circular, he was arrested in Delhi on Sunday.
On Monday, the accused was brought to Indore and kept at Bhanwarkuan police station. After hearing in court, he was remanded to police custody at Bhanwarkuan police station for three days.
Gupta through his counsel told court on Monday that he had sent a notice for divorce to Veebha who denied receiving it.
