SGSITS to introduce credit for Emotional Well-being & Holistic Development

Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), one of India’s leading engineering institutions, is set to take significant strides in promoting emotional well-being, mindfulness, and holistic development for its students, faculty, and even the wider community. The institute is introducing a credit-based course as part of its curriculum to help students focus on emotional well-being and personal growth, aligning with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020).
In addition to this, SGSITS will soon offer a comprehensive program on the Science of Happiness and Well-being, accessible not only to students but also to outsiders. The program will be designed to enhance emotional and mental wellness, offering a wide range of tools to improve overall quality of life.
Prof. Sarika Tiwari, Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at SGSITS, is spearheading the development of these courses, with support from other faculty members who are contributing their expertise to create the content.
To further this mission, SGSITS has received financial support of approximately Rs 35 Lakhs per year from the Rekhi Foundation, USA, for the development and implementation of these initiatives. The Rekhi Foundation has also agreed to share its knowledge and expertise in the Science of Happiness, gained over the past few years. This partnership has led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the “Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness-SGSITS Indore.” The centre will also support the creation of a Mind Lab – an innovative research facility focused on understanding cognitive and emotional health.
The Mind Lab will employ advanced technologies to measure and analyze stress levels, focus, and other cognitive states, empowering individuals and organizations to make informed decisions about mental well-being. Through this collaboration, SGSITS aims to create a nurturing environment that fosters mindfulness, stress management, emotional intelligence, and resilience-building.
Prof. Neetesh Purohit, Director of SGSITS, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing the well-being of our students and faculty. The Centre for Happiness will serve as a beacon of positivity, helping individuals develop a balanced and fulfilling academic and personal life.”
Dr. Satinder Singh Rekhi, Chairman of the Rekhi Foundation for Happiness, emphasised the foundation's mission to integrate happiness and mental wellness into educational institutions. An Electrical Engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur and a postgraduate in Business from California State University, Dr. Rekhi has helped establish over 50 centres for happiness and Mind Labs across six countries, advancing the scientific study of happiness.
