Madhya Pradesh ranks 4th in India for offering three languages at the Upper Primary stage and 6th at the Secondary stage in a update shared with the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In the update, Union Ministry of Education revealed comprehensive data on language offerings across India’s vast school system.
The data highlights the multilingual education approach followed by Indian schools and how it caters to the language needs of the country's student population. According to the report, out of the total 1.47 million schools in India, the majority follow a multilingual framework, with a significant portion offering students a diverse set of language options.
While the state is leading in rural education, especially in terms of offering diverse language options to students, there is room for improvement in urban areas and at the secondary school level. By focusing on these areas, Madhya Pradesh can further strengthen its position in the national education landscape and ensure that all students, regardless of their location, have access to high-quality, multilingual education.
Madhya Pradesh's Ranking:
1. Primary School Stage (Upper Primary) - 4th Place: Madhya Pradesh ranks 4th in terms of the total number of schools (31,780) offering three languages at the Upper Primary stage. This places the state among the top performers in India for multilingual education at the primary level.
o Rural Schools: MP leads in rural areas with 22,024 schools offering three languages, showing a strong focus on ensuring rural students have access to diverse language options.
o Urban Schools: MP has 9,756 urban schools offering three languages, ranking lower than states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh but still significant.
2. Secondary School Stage - 6th Place: Madhya Pradesh holds the 6th place in the Secondary stage, with 7,907 schools offering three languages. While this is impressive, the state lags behind others such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, which have a higher number of schools offering three languages at the Secondary level.
o Rural Areas: MP has 4,139 rural schools offering three languages, which reflects its rural-focused educational strategy.
o Urban Areas: Urban areas in MP have 3,768 schools offering three languages, which places the state behind other larger states.

Key Insights from the Comparison:
1. Strength in Rural Education:
Madhya Pradesh's significant strength lies in its rural schools. With 22,024 rural schools offering three languages at the upper primary stage, the state prioritizes multilingual education in areas where it is most needed. This reflects the government's commitment to providing quality education to rural students and ensuring equal access to language diversity.
2. Urban vs Rural Focus:
While Madhya Pradesh ranks 4th overall in the primary stage for multilingual education, it lags behind states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in urban areas. The state's urban schools (9,756) offering three languages are fewer than those in other states, which highlights the need for further investment in urban multilingual education.
3. Secondary Education Challenges:
At the secondary level, Madhya Pradesh ranks 6th with 7,907 schools offering three languages. This indicates a need to focus on improving multilingual education at the secondary level. The state's focus on rural education is evident here too, with more rural schools providing three languages than urban ones.
4. Focus Areas for Improvement:
o Urban Multilingual Education: Madhya Pradesh should look at expanding the number of urban schools offering three languages, especially in cities where the demand for diverse educational opportunities is growing.
o Secondary Education: Enhancing multilingual education at the secondary level will help MP maintain its competitive edge and improve the quality of education across the board.
