Urjasvini Special school hosts ‘waste to best’ workshop @3Rs to promote environmental awareness

Urjasvini Special School, Indore, organised a waste to best art workshop on World Environment Day to raise environmental awareness and demonstrate practical ways to reuse household waste. The event aimed to familiarise students and participants with the principles of the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.

Transforming daily household discard into practical art

During the session, participants were shown how discarded coconut shells could be transformed into plant pots. Workshop artist Pooja Patidar explained that simple techniques could convert everyday waste into useful items. She said the initiative encouraged people to find practical uses for materials often thrown away.

“Even small efforts in reusing and recycling waste can make a difference to our environment,” Patidar added.

Fostering eco-friendly habits from an early age

School director Dr Vini Jhariya said the workshop was part of the school’s ongoing efforts to engage students and the community in sustainable practices. She noted that participants were encouraged to take similar projects home to reduce household waste and adopt eco-friendly habits, emphasising that understanding the 3Rs was a step towards responsible living.

The workshop highlights the importance of educating children about environmental conservation and fostering a culture of sustainability from a young age.

Core pillars of the creative conservation session
  • Practical application framework: Actively demonstrating localized upcycling methods, using materials like discarded coconut shells as functional alternative plant pots.
  • The 3Rs methodology: Systematically breaking down the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling for inclusive community education.
  • Domestic waste reduction: Encouraging early implementation of home-based upcycling projects to immediately lower family discard numbers.
  • Early generational target: Designing tactile learning experiences to build a reliable culture of environmental stewardship in students from a young age.
