For the first time this academic session, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has opened doors for Class 11 students to combine subjects beyond the rigid silos of traditional Science, Commerce, and Humanities streams. However, as schools in Indore and across India adjust to this change, a clear trend is emerging: while the flexibility is welcomed, the gravitational pull of core stream-based learning remains the primary driver of student choices.
The Shift Toward Multidisciplinary Learning
The new reform aims to dismantle the strict walls between academic streams, allowing students to curate a subject list that reflects their genuine interests. By selecting subjects across disciplines, students can now retain hobbies or creative pursuits that were previously forced to the sidelines the moment they declared a 'stream.'
Take the example of Anika Sharma, a Class 11 student who has combined PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) with Painting. For Anika, this flexibility is a bridge between her professional ambitions and her personal passions.
"I wanted to continue with science, but I did not want to leave painting behind," Anika says. "Earlier, choosing a stream often meant leaving other interests. Having this option gives students more freedom."
Why Traditional Streams Still Dominate
Despite the freedom, the reality of competitive entrance exams and university prerequisites keeps most students tethered to traditional combinations. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology—or Mathematics and Accounts—continue to command the bulk of a student's preparation time and energy.
Lakshya K, a Class 12 student, reflects on the cautious approach many take. "If I was entering Class 11 today, I would probably choose something beyond the traditional streams, but it is not easy," he explains. "Students still have to consider future requirements. I might love a subject, but if I’m unsure about its impact on college admissions, it is scary. I would probably not take that risk."
The School Perspective: Implementation Challenges
For educational institutions, the transition is a logistical puzzle. UK Jha, a CBSE coordinator, notes that while the objective of student flexibility is noble, it requires significant infrastructure adjustments. "Schools have to coordinate teachers, classrooms, and timetables according to the combinations students select," he explains.
Principal Winston Gomez emphasizes the need for equilibrium. "Students should get opportunities, but they also need a strong base in their main subjects. The system has to support choices without affecting the core learning structure," he asserts.
Competency-Based Learning: A New Classroom Reality
Alongside subject flexibility, the classroom environment itself is evolving. Educators are moving away from rote memorization in favor of application and analysis.
- Mathematics: PGT teacher Pankaj Mishra notes that students can no longer just rely on remembering formulas; they must master concept application.
- English: TGT teacher Kuldeep Kaur highlights a shift toward interpretation, reasoning, and clear expression over textbook reproduction.
- Social Science: TGT teacher Arva Shakir believes interdisciplinary learning helps students connect dots, provided they have the right guidance.
The Parental Dilemma: Freedom vs. Future Pathways
Parents are largely supportive but remain cautious about the long-term implications. Hitesh Jhariya, a parent, voices a common concern regarding university readiness. "I want my child to have freedom, but children already have a hard time focusing. The concern is that they could be completely lost in college if universities and entrance systems do not recognize these new combinations," he says. "Students need to know exactly what options they will have later."
As this academic year progresses, it is clear that while the CBSE has provided the framework for a more personalized education, the journey to fully integrating these choices with college entrance pathways is just beginning.
