July Magic: From Moon Rocks to Master Moves

On July 20, we celebrate International Moon Day, inviting us to look up at the sky, explore space, and discover the science behind our amazing Moon. The same day also marks World Chess Day, a celebration of strategy, patience, and smart thinking.

🚀 Science Corner: Moon Rocks

What You Need

• Baking soda
• Water
• Food colouring (black, blue, or purple)
• Glitter (optional)
• White vinegar
• Dropper, pipette, or squeeze bottle
• Bowl and tray

Instructions

1. Add baking soda to a bowl. Slowly mix in colored water a little at a time until the mixture feels crumbly but holds together when squeezed.
2. Add a little glitter if you want your moon rocks to sparkle like a galaxy.
3. Shape the mixture into small rock-like balls using your hands. They do not need to be perfectly shaped.
4. Place the moon rocks in the freezer for about 30 minutes to help them become firm.
5. Put the moon rocks on a tray and use a dropper or squeeze bottle to add vinegar. Watch as they fizz, bubble, and dissolve!

The fizzing happens because baking soda and vinegar create a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide gas. The bubbles you see are the gas escaping, making this a simple and exciting introduction to chemistry.

🧁 Easy Pumpkin Muffins

You Will Need

• 1¾ cups flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice
• ½ cup sugar
• ½ cup brown sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1 cup pumpkin puree
• ½ cup melted butter
• ¼ cup sour cream

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
2. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin spice in a bowl.
3. In another bowl, stir together the sugars, eggs, pumpkin puree, melted butter, and sour cream.
4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and gently mix until combined.
5. Scoop the batter into the muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
6. Bake for 18–20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
7. Let the muffins cool slightly, then enjoy your delicious pumpkin treat!
