The Secret City Inside You is a child-friendly science reading passage designed to make cell biology easier to understand. Through Aarav's imaginary adventure inside his own body, learners meet cells, the cell membrane, nucleus, DNA, mitochondria, and other important parts of a cell.

The Secret City Inside You
One morning, Aarav woke up and looked in the mirror.
“Why am I alive?” he wondered. “And how does my body know what to do?”
Suddenly, a tiny voice whispered:
Aarav looked around. No one was there.
“Down here!” said the voice.
Aarav looked at his hand.
He became smaller… and smaller… and smaller!
Soon, he was standing inside his own body.
“Welcome to Cell City!” said the tiny voice.
Aarav looked around in amazement. There were millions of tiny structures everywhere.
“Are these… houses?”
“Not exactly,” laughed the voice. “They are cells!”
Welcome to Cell City
A cell is the smallest basic unit of life. Your body is made of trillions of cells.
“Trillions?!” Aarav shouted.
“Yes! Your body is like a giant city, and cells are like its tiny citizens.”
Aarav spotted different kinds of cells.
There were red blood cells carrying oxygen.
There were nerve cells sending messages.
There were muscle cells helping the body move.
There were skin cells forming a protective covering.
“So all cells are the same?” Aarav asked.
“Not at all!” said the voice. “They have different jobs, just like people in a city.”
The Cell's Security Gate
Aarav entered a cell and immediately saw a thin covering around it.
“What is this?”
“That is the cell membrane. Think of it as the cell's security gate.”
“Does it let everything inside?”
“No! It controls what enters and leaves the cell.”
Aarav saw oxygen entering.
“Welcome!” said the membrane.
Then a waste substance tried to enter.
“Sorry,” said the membrane. “Wrong direction!”
Aarav laughed.
“So the membrane is the cell's security guard?”
“Exactly!”
The Cell's Control Room
Next, Aarav entered a large structure.
“This is the nucleus,” said the voice.
“What does it do?”
“The nucleus is like the control centre of the cell. It contains DNA, which carries important instructions.”
“So DNA tells the cell what to do?”
“That's right!”
Aarav imagined the DNA as a giant instruction book.
The Cell's Power Stations
Suddenly, the room became bright.
“What are those bean-shaped things?” Aarav asked.
“Those are mitochondria.”
“And what do they do?”
“They help release energy from food.”
Aarav looked impressed.
“So they are like power stations?”
“Exactly! Your cells need energy to work, and mitochondria help provide it.”
The Cell Factory
Aarav continued exploring.
He saw tiny structures making different substances.
“What happens here?”
“This is where the cell makes many of the materials it needs. Some structures help make proteins, while others help process and transport substances.”
Aarav looked around.
“This place is busier than my school!”
“Of course!” laughed the voice. “Your cells are working all the time!”
A Final Surprise
Aarav suddenly remembered something.
“If cells are so tiny, how can my body be so big?”
“Excellent question!”
The voice explained:
Aarav thought about his heart, lungs, brain, muscles, and skin.
“So I'm basically a huge team of tiny workers!”
“Exactly!”
WHOOSH!
Aarav suddenly became normal-sized again.
He looked at his hand.
It looked exactly the same.
But now he knew something amazing:
He smiled.
“Tomorrow,” he said, “I'm going to learn what happens when cells divide!”

A cell is a basic unit of life. Similar cells can work together as tissues. Different tissues can combine to form organs, and organs can work together as organ systems.
Disagree. A cell is much more than a tiny bag of liquid. It contains organised structures that perform different jobs. For example, the cell membrane controls movement of substances, the nucleus contains DNA, and mitochondria help release energy from food.
Animal cell. The clue is the absence of chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are found in plant cells and are involved in photosynthesis. Animal cells do not have chloroplasts.
Answer: A. They would have less energy.
Mitochondria help release energy from food. Muscle cells need energy to carry out their work, including movement. If mitochondria were not working properly, the cells would have difficulty supplying the energy they need.
An organ needs many cells because different cells can have specialised jobs. Working together allows the organ to perform complex functions that one cell could not carry out by itself. For example, the heart contains many cells that work together so the heart can contract and pump blood.
Answers will vary. A strong response should describe a cell's job, the materials it needs, how it obtains energy, and how it works with neighbouring cells. Students should aim to write 4–5 clear sentences using appropriate science vocabulary.

Make a Cell City
Ask learners to draw a city and label each part using cell vocabulary. The city gate can represent the cell membrane, the control room can represent the nucleus, and power stations can represent mitochondria. Students can then explain why each comparison makes sense.
