Anaemia: a major cause for maternal death, indicator of other major diseases like Blood Cancer: Dr. Usha Shrivastava

More than 53% women and 24% men suffer from anaemia! Not just this, about 59% children in India also suffer from anaemia as per National Family Health Survey (NFHS) and the lancet Global Health Journal.
Yes, those dark circles are not just cosmetic, they are indicating the lack of haemoglobin level (red blood cells or RBCs) in your body. It is a rising fear among women that they will not look ‘pretty’ if they put on weight, so the number of women suffering from anorexia (fear of weight gain) is on the rise too. Here is a full guide on anaemia with advice from Gynaecologist Dr. Usha Shrivastav
Nobody wants to be labelled ‘Fat’ so we often reduce our food intake, limit our energy sources and in turn, suffer from various deficiencies and prominent one being anaemia. Anaemia not only affects the way you look, but also your daily life and can even threaten your life.
How does anaemia affect life?
Anaemia is the lack of RBCs that carry oxygen to every part of the body. With lack of RBCs, it becomes difficult for the body to get enough oxygen supply. Hence, initially, you feel tired, dizzy, lazy, breathless, brittle nails, swelling and headache.
Anaemia is a major cause of maternal death (India contributes to about 80% of the maternal death due to anaemia in South Asia according to World Health Organisation (WHO)). Further, it can damage organs and result in abortion, under-weight baby, death of baby and even affect the heart of a person.
Avoid anaemia by eating:
Beans (black beans, soybeans, peas, lima beans, chickpeas & kidney beans)
Green veggies
Nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, cashews, pistachios & sunflower seeds)
Sea food
Red meat
Bananas and apples
Remember: Eat iron-rich foods with vitamin C-rich foods, such as oranges, tomatoes, or strawberries, to improve absorption.
Low RBC might point to other major issues
Just because your RBC count looks less, it is not just anaemia. Anaemia can be a just a pointer of other severe diseases like:
Blood cancer
Kidney damage
Spleen issues
Excessive bleeding
