High bp affecting 1 out of 4, including youngsters, Why? Dr. Bharat Rawat

As one watches a live intense cricket match or a political drama (like we recently had) that keeps changing every moment, boom your heart rate and pressures in your blood vessels jumps! This might be a temporary effect. But if you feel the same excitement and restlessness all the time, with no long breaks of silence and peace then it won’t be entertaining or safe anymore, would it?
One out of every four persons suffers from such a condition that is high blood pressure (bp) or hypertension in India according to a study done by Public health foundation of India (Journal of hypertension). It is well documented that the percentage of people with high BP keeps increasing with age, e.g. approximately 20% of 20-year olds, 40% of 40-year olds, 60% of 60-year olds, and 80% of 80-year olds have high BP.
High BP is the most common cause of death and disability throughout the world.
Cardiologist Dr. Bharat Rawat shared his insight on how to manage our high bp by simple measures. We need to understand that excitement and rush of fast paced life feels great, but only for a while. Unless, we are able to stabilise ourselves, we are bound to suffer from all kind of problems from physical to emotional, mental and social.
People believe that high blood pressure is purely physical condition and has nothing to do with our actions. That is completely wrong. There are three basic causes other than genetic and aging that cause high blood pressure even in youngsters today:
1) Food habits: Indians typically consume double the recommended amount (a tea spoon or 5 Gm) of salt each day. This high salt intake is a major reason for high bp.
2) Balancing life and managing time: A regular 40 min of sports/ yoga/ cycling or running done 6 days a week may do wonders to your overall health.
3) Stable and cheerful mood: We should try to enjoy simple measures of happiness like morning walks, gardening, reading good books, playing with a pet etc.
