Smile Girls! Accept, Understand & Beat depression: Dr. Smita Agrawal

From the patriarchal social structure that forces women to make compromises to hormonal variations, there are many parameters that make a woman more prone to some problems like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Men, on the other hand, are more prone to substance abuse and bipolar disorder. In fact, men have a much higher rate of suicide as compared to women around the world. In India, it is on the rise based on current news.

Let's address women, mental issues faced by them and possible ways to deal with it, in this article as shared by subject expert Psychiatrist Dr. Smita Agarwal.
Understanding teenage girls
Imagine your body changing quickly every day with a rush of hormone empowering every emotion to the extreme. A change, where suddenly, you feel different and easily hurt by every comment. Further, every other person around is noticing your bodily changes and does not think twice about making a comment. This is a brief view of what a teenage girl goes through. However, if you notice the following then it is a clear sign of depression:
Persistent sadness
Hopelessness and pessimistic view of life
Insomnia or oversleeping (ideal is 7 to 8 hours of sleep)
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
Low appetite and weight loss or overeating and weight gain
Restlessness, irritability
Too much acidity and other physical issues that do not respond to medicine
How to help your teenager through depression?
Talk to teen as a friend, it means treating them as adults capable of making a decision.
Do not order your child, discuss and rather take their suggestion as well.
Remember to discuss other issues than homework, schooling, career and future. Talk about current affairs, neighbours and general life.
Never skip or hide important events, even if they are unfortunate.
Common ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ in middle-aged women
Since most women concentrate their life on children, when children grow up and find their own ways, the lady of the house finds her home and life rather empty. In such a situation, many women feel depressed and can even suffer from Empty Nest Syndrome. It might seem obvious but feeling low for too long (more than 15 days) and unable to find happiness, can result in clinical depression. Women can come out of this phase with relaxation techniques, finding a hobby, pursuing a career, etc. However, one should consult a qualified psychiatrist for proper guidance and help.
