Oh you are sweet! Of course that’s a compliment, but if that sweetness continues 24×7, the same sweetness is likely to frustrate you. Similarly, when we continue to have a diet that makes our body secrete insulin to digest the sugars too often, we end up developing insulin resistance in long term.
This insulin resistance is one of the root causes for obesity, diabetes and hypertension. These are often termed as non-communicable diseases.
Don’t really have sugar so no risk? Think again! Registered dietitian Dr. Preeti Shukla explained the real problems with Indian diets and modifications to avoid these non-communicable diseases.
These diseases are also known as metabolic syndrome which is rapidly spreading in all sections of the society including the underprivileged society people also.
Problem with our diet
Indian diet is mostly focused on high carbohydrate intake through the consumption of poha, daliya, chapatti, rice and sugar. When the major component of the diet is carbohydrate, it also requires enough insulin production. Due to inactivity in day-to-day routine, insulin resistance develops resulting in obesity.
“In a recent survey done it was found that 30% of Indian population is suffering from insulin resistance, which further more contributes towards diabetes and obesity.”
Make a change, Beat Insulin Resistance!
Making a shift from high carbohydrate foods to high protein foods will reduce the incidence of insulin resistance in general population. Proteins are mainly found in milk, paneer, pulses, eggs, nuts, fish and chicken.
Have a balanced diet: it means each and every essential macro and micro nutrient must be present in every meal. It means having an entire meal not just chapatti and vegetable.
Remove food delivery apps and say goodbye to them forever. The high calorie food from restaurants and take away can do more harm than you realise.
Think about health over greed: Never opt for a large bucket of popcorns, double cheeseburger, etc. as they are often oversized portions that negatively impacts body weight.
Reduce calories consumed: it will help an individual to control his body weight and reduce the incidence of diabetes as well as hypertension.
Exercise to spend all the extra calories, develops lean muscles, decrease insulin resistance and increase insulin sensitivity.
