Digital fails? Don't pay the price! Consumer Forum orders SBI card to compensate

Shopping online but stuck due to failing card and banking services? This might seem like an ordinary situation to many consumers, who are dealing with online shopping issues and payments.
However, District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum Indore-2 does not find faltering services from banks justified. Giving verdict on a case of SBI (State Bank of India) card, a public sector banking and financial services statutory body, president Omprakash Sharma and member Sumitra Hatiwala ordered the bank to pay compensation of Rs 5,000.
Getting the hang of digitalisation, 50-year-old Sandeep Jaiswal, son of Radheshyam, requested credit card service from his bank. The bank issued the card as per their norms on Oct 31, 2017.
Excited to buy stuff online without paying cash on delivery charges, Jaiswal, a resident of Shyam Nagar, browsed through amazon and found SSD laptop hard disc that he had been looking for. When he tried to make the payment through card for first EMI of the disc, the card failed.
Confused, the plaintiff tried to book train tickets online for commute. However, even that transaction failed. Both the transactions were tried and failed on November 6, 2017.
After the transactions failed, the plaintiff received a notification of transaction of Rs 3,043. The amount was charged to the card, whereas none of the transactions attempted by the plaintiff were successful.
Taking immediate action, the plaintiff called the bank and informed about the wrong transaction shown in the account. The bank employee took the transaction in notice and assured the plaintiff of inspection.
The inspection was done, but of no use. On June 17, 2018, the plaintiff received credit card bill of Rs 7,000 (Rs 3,043 + interest). With no way out, the plaintiff paid the amount.
Unsatisfied by the services provided by the bank, Jaiswal approached consumer forum sharing his dilemma. During the hearing, the plaintiff presented account statements and bills of credit card as proof.
Considering the failure on the part of bank in providing safe service, the forum ordered the bank to pay back Rs 7,000 collected for an authorised transaction and interest. The amount has to be paid with interest at the rate of 9 percent from June 2018.
Further, for the mental agony caused to plaintiff Rs 5,000 compensation including consumer forum charges has to be paid by the bank.
