Good Friday: prayers to Jesus Christ to heal the world from Covid-19 or coronavirus

On Good Friday, Christian community commemorated the crucifixion and thanked Jesus Christ for saving them by bearing the cross to shoulder as the burden of our sin and suffering.

The community organised the commemoration ceremony at various churches with only priest and a few community members. Maximum community members stayed at home with their families and attended the ceremonies online.

The entire community also attended the live telecast of rituals by the Pope at Vatican City.

Priest of St Joseph’s Church Rev Fr Thomas Rajamanikam said, “Jesus carried the cross the cross to the Calvery where he was crucified. He was beaten, scourged at the pillar and crowned with thorns. He saved the humanity from the clutches of sins. He forgave us. Christ offered his sacrifice with tears and cries.”

The community remembered from the day from scripture, which says: "Although he was a Son, he learned through suffering what obedience was, and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for those who obey him".

All the members of St Joseph Church, Nanda Nagar, who can participate, were asked to gather at their respective homes at 3 pm in the afternoon.

The parish priest celebrated the ceremony in the Church, which was telecasted online. The ceremony had three parts: the word of God from the Bible, the veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion.

In the first part 3 readings were taken from the bible. The gospel reading from St John's Gospel is the passion narrative of Jesus, the longest reading lasted for 25 minutes. All knelt down and prayed at the time when it was read "Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit".

The first reading was read by Sr Vimla Lakra, the second reading by Dilraj, the passion reading by Sr Susanna. Sr Prabha Dabi and Fr Thomas gave a short homily.

He said, “Give primary place to God who saves you from the Evil and listen to him. Pray for the world today which suffering greatly. Lord Jesus redeem the world from this epidemic.”

Community members prayed the universal prayer for 10 important intentions. One of the intentions was the intention of covid-19 victims and for the deliverance. The second part was the veneration of the Cross. Each part of the wounds were unveiled and the priest sang ‘see the wound of Christ on the cross in which Jesus the saviour was hung’.

Community members in the live session replied, ‘come we shall venerate’. After that, the kissing of the cross took place in their respective houses. In the third part, the priest brought the Holy Communion, prayed and distributed to only four persons present in the church. The priest asked the people in their houses to have spiritual union with Jesus. Then the priest said the final prayer of blessing.
