Independence Day is more than a day on the calendar. It is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and dreams of the people who helped India find its freedom.
This year, let’s remember that spirit in our own way. Create the Tree of Unity and see how many colours, ideas, and dreams can come together as one. Bring the tricolour to your table with a special recipe. Travel back in time through the crossword and discover the people, places, and movements that shaped our freedom struggle. Then take on the Path to Freedom and see if you can find your way to the flag.
As you create, cook, remember, and solve, take a moment to think about what freedom means to you.
Because a nation is not just its history or its flag. It is the people who carry its hopes forward.
Let’s celebrate the India we inherited, honour the India we cherish, and imagine the India we will build.
Happy Independence Day.
Jai Hind.

Tree of Unity
The Tree of Unity is a creative way to think about what it means for many different people, ideas and dreams to come together. As you make the craft, the tricolour design becomes a visual reminder of unity and togetherness.
Materials Needed
- Paper: 2 sheets of heavy cardstock or a paper plate
- Colours: Orange, white, and green markers, crayons, or paints
- Tools: Scissors, a hole punch, and a glue stick
- Hanging: A piece of string and a paperclip or swivel clip
Instructions
- Draw the art: Trace a large circle on your paper and draw a tree using orange leaves, a blue trunk, and green roots.
- Colour both sides: Fill in the background with orange, white, and green tricolour stripes on both the front and back.
- Cut the circle: Carefully cut around the outer edge to create a flat circular paper disk.
- Slit the rings: Fold the circle gently in half and make parallel cuts from the fold outward, stopping 1/2 inch before the edge.
- Punch the hole: Unfold the disk and punch a single hole at the very top of the outer ring.
- Fan into 3D: Push the centre inward while twisting the tricolour outer rings outward to fan them into a 3D shape.
- Hang and spin: Tie your string through the hole, attach a swivel clip, and hang it near a breeze for your Independence Day display.
A tree grows from many parts working together. Think about the people, communities and ideas that help a country grow too. If you are making this with children, ask them what “unity” means to them and what makes people different while still belonging together.
Tricolour Gnocchi
Bring the tricolour to the table with a colourful gnocchi activity. The idea is simple: prepare the gnocchi, divide it into three portions and use different sauces to create orange, white and green sections.
Tricolour Gnocchi
Ingredients
- 2 large russet potatoes, 1 cup flour, ½ tsp salt
- Chopped tomatoes or tomato sauce
- Peas, spinach, broccoli, or beans
Instructions
- Mix mashed potatoes, flour, and salt into a dough. Roll, cut into 1-inch pieces, and boil until they float.
- Arrange the gnocchi, tomatoes, and green vegetables in orange, white, and green sections to create the Indian Tricolour.
Let children help with safe, age-appropriate parts such as arranging the cooked gnocchi and creating the three colour sections on the plate. An adult should handle hot pans, boiling water and other cooking steps that require supervision.

What Children Can Learn From These Activities
Independence Day activities can be more than something to keep children busy. When a craft, recipe, history puzzle or maths challenge is connected to a meaningful occasion, children have an opportunity to learn while doing something together.
There is no need to turn every activity into a test. Let children ask questions, make mistakes and discuss what they notice. The interactive checkers are there to make the activities playful and self-correcting, not to replace conversation or guidance.
Making Independence Day More Meaningful
Independence Day can be celebrated in many different ways. A flag, a song, a school programme or a family meal can all become a starting point for a bigger conversation about what freedom means.
After completing an activity, try asking one simple question: “What does freedom mean to you?”
The answer may be different for every child. For one child, it may mean being able to learn. For another, it may mean having a voice, making choices, helping others or respecting people who are different from them.
The aim is not to find one perfect answer. It is to create space for children and families to think, remember and imagine the kind of India they want to help build.
