Why National Sports Day Matters
National Sports Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to recognise sporting excellence while encouraging young people to discover the joy of movement, teamwork, discipline and participation. Major Dhyan Chand's legacy gives the day a powerful connection to India's sporting history.
Government of India material identifies 29 August as National Sports Day because it commemorates Major Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary. Official information has also highlighted the importance of wider participation in sports and fitness activities.
For students, that message can be wonderfully simple: you do not have to be the fastest runner, strongest player or best scorer in the class to belong in sport. You can start with a game, a walk, a new skill, a team activity—or even a tiny craft-stick hockey goal on your desk.
