Life is not meant for just living, it is meant for rejoicing. That is the lesson that Nalini Nanote taught me. She left me speechless, so can't say much.
Even after three cancer attacks, 71-year-old Nalini Nanote lives a normal life, travels frequently and enjoys every moment.
Sharing her story, she said, “I was first diagnosed with cancer in January 1998.” My gynaecologist referred me to a cancer specialist, who explained the procedure to me,” she added.
She went through six shots of chemotherapy, which left her feeling woozy. “However, I recovered very fast because I wanted to,” Nanote said. She continued her job as a senior supervisor at BSNL, while handling her household responsibilities.
“My life got back to track and I lived a normal life, till I got retired,” she said. After retirement, she was diagnosed with throat cancer. “I could not eat or drink anything for eight months,” Nanote shared. Her doctor did not operate on her, saying it would not be safe.
“Initially, they put a stand through my chest for feeding me, and advised five shots of chemo,” she said. While most patients don’t survive the shots or stay dependent on doctors, Nanote took a stand and forced food through her food pipe. “Once I ate, the doctor was amazed and asked me to continue trying to eat,” she added.
Over the next couple of months, Nanote got her system going and became independent again. “Lately, I was diagnosed with cancer that had to be operated again,” she shared. This time she did not require chemo, she recovered on her own.
“I still travel every chance I get, I live my life to the fullest, just like everyone else should do,” Nanote said. She advised cancer patients to trust their doctor and get timely checkups. “We can’t decide when we die, but we shall live well as along as we live,” she said.
