Finding strength in the everyday: the inspiring journey of Komal Vyas
Komal Vyas: Finding beauty in every aspect of life.
Often we ignore simple tasks in life, but for some, those simple ones form an everyday challenge. Finding her inner strength to accept challenges with a smile, cashier Komal Vyas is a lady of substance with an inspiring story.
"I have never known life any other way, but even after knowing that I am different, I never wished to end my life or anything like that."
Komal explained that youngsters committing suicide shocks her because, to her, life is beautiful in every way. Her journey with physical limitations began at birth. "I could not gain weight like normal babies and therefore, my lower body refused to grow," Komal said. She underwent her first operation to put a rod in her leg when she was only three days old.
Her parents, Anju and the late Shambu Lal Vyas, tried everything to ensure she lived a normal life. She went through another seven surgeries as she grew. "The rod surgeries and other therapies worked for a while—at most I could walk for a year—but they did not last," Komal recalled. Despite the limitations, she never cribbed or cried about her situation.
Challenges in education
Komal attended a nearby school until class eight, traveling by auto-rickshaw. "Things changed when I had to change school and go to Kendriya Vidyalaya in class ninth," she said. Her father would take her to school and physically carry her to class.
The transition wasn't easy. "At first, I could not get admission in any high school and for the first time, I realized that not being able to walk is a bigger problem than I understood." Refusing to give up, she took on high school as another challenge. After a surgery in Udaipur during class tenth, she was able to walk with special shoes for two years, but after class 12th, the hope of walking again began to dim.
Becoming the pillar of the house
Life took a drastic turn during her fifth semester of college when her father and biggest supporter passed away. "I had to be ‘the man’ of the house," Komal said. She moved from a summer job at a call center to a permanent role as a cashier for the Bandi family, proving that physical limitations cannot stop a determined spirit from supporting those they love.
