Bringing pride to the city and wings to her dreams, 14-year-old shooter Anshika Gupta has secured scholarship of Rs 40 lakhs from ‘Khelo India’ with her excellent shooting skills.
The Khelo India programme by government of India aims to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.
Having excelled and selected among top 5 shooters in the country, Anshika will receive annual financial assistance of INR 5 lakh per annum for 8 years. She will also get assistance in form of equipments to practise shooting.
Story of the young shooter
Born and brought up in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, Anshika had no exposure to the world of sports until 2016. “In 2016, when I came into class VII, my parents sent me to Indore to study in Emerald Heights International School, since there were no good schools in Sidhi for higher education,” she said.
Moving to Indore, she lived in school boarding along for the first time in her life. “I have two elder sisters (Vartika and Avantika), who completed their high school in Gwalior, so I was expecting to move out,” Anshika said.
Introduction to Shooting
“In my school, it was compulsory to practise a sport or an activity, so I tried swimming first, but I did not enjoy it,” Anshika said. Next she tried shooting and found her calling.
“It was not easy, I practised 3 hours every day and with support of my coach (V Ganesh), I got better at shooting,” Anshika said. She missed her family, town and friends, but shooting helped her in becoming more focused towards her future.
Achievements
“I have been shooting for two years and last year in December, I participated in SGFI (School Games Federation of India) shooting competition,” Anshika said. She reached nationals of the competition and qualified among the top 6 shooters of the country.
“Next, I had to try for Khelo India, which would give me an assurance of a future in shooting,” Anshika said. With her passion and hard work, she qualified as top 5 in the championship and bagged the scholarship.
Daughter shines with parents support
“My parents (homemaker Urmilla and businessman Vishwanath Gupta) supported me in every possible way and have supported all of us, which has led to becoming star daughters for them,” Anshika said. She quoted the importance of supporting daughters for having a brighter future for the country.
