Observing ‘Shravan Somvar Vrat’, women and men fasted for the day by limiting their diet to fruits and one meal. The day is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Further, some would be fast on Tuesday known as ‘Mangala Gauri Vrat’.
The month of Sawan is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar beginning from Chaitra, and is the most auspicious month of the Chaturmas. On Purnima or full moon day, or during the course of the month the star ‘Shravan’ rules the sky, hence the month is called Shravan.
Temples in the city thronged with devotees for ‘rudra abhishek’ in the morning. ‘Om Namah Shivay’ echoed in the air throughout the day in temples. Most temples had prepared special ‘prasad’ that was distributed among devotees in the morning and evening.

Major celebrations of the first Monday of Shravan were seen in Baaneshwar Mahadev located in Banganga and Shiva temple located in Devguradia, Bhuteshwar Mahadev in Radha Swami Nagar, Indreshwar Mahadev at Pandharinath square, Kantipodh Mandir located at Agrasen square, Gopeshwar Mahadev at Gandhi Hall, Jadeshwar Mahadev behind Rajwada, Ahilyeshwar Shiva temple in Subhash Nagar, Baneshwar Mahadev located in Banganga, Gyaneshwar Dwadash Jyotirlinga Temple in Pardesipura, Vaishnavadham Temple, Bholenath temple in Geeta Bhawan, Shiva temples on Kesar Bagh road, and Annapurna temple.
People worshiped Shiva by performing special ‘poojan-abhishek’ at these temples as well as many other local temples in colonies.
