The Central Board of Secondary Education
(CBSE) has directed its affiliated schools to make sure that all the students
in the respective schools save at least one litre of water at home and the
schools daily.
The new directives issued by board have
been initiated to make all the schools and the students take part in the Jal
Shakti Abhiyaan. The board has also directed the schools to compulsory create
an eco-club along with strengthening the existing ones.
The chairperson of CBSE Anita Karwal said
that although the eco clubs will continue promoting the environment and climate
literacy motivating the students to become champions for environmental
sustainability while the base of these year’s co-curricular activities from the
primary to the senior secondary will be water conservation.
She added that the CBSE schools will follow
an agenda for this academic year. “This initiative will make sure that every
child in the CBSE schools from classes 5 to 12 will save at least one litre of
water every day at home and at school and the schools will set a target to
become water-efficient in the next three years,” Anita said, pointing out the aim
of the drive.
Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a collaborative
effort of various Ministries of the Government of India and State Governments,
being coordinated by Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. Teams of
officers from the central government will visit and work with district
administration in 1592 water stressed blocks in 256 districts, to ensure five
important water conservation interventions.
These will be water conservation and
rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies/tanks,
reuse, bore well recharge structures, watershed development and intensive
afforestation.
These water conservation efforts will also be
supplemented with special interventions including the development of Block and
District Water Conservation Plans, promotion of efficient water use for
irrigation and better choice of crops through Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
The monsoon phase of Jal Abhiyaan began on
July 1 and will continue till September 15. An additional Phase 2 will be run
from October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019.
Indore schools support the move
Representing CBSE schools of Indore, Reena
Khurana, chairperson of Sahodaya group of CBSE schools, supported the move and
said, “These are basic life lesson, which must be inculcated in children from a
nascent age and all the schools support the move.” She added that parents’
participation would be essential to impart eh lesson successfully.
