With the temperatures falling down and relief from scorching heat, monsoons have brought joy and adventurous zeal in most animals at Indore city zoo. If you are someone, who has dreamt of seeing the dancing peacock exposing its colourful feathers, then this is the right time to visit the zoo.
With the first pair of mute swans and black swans enjoying the rain, every visitor from a curious child to a sensitive senior feels mesmerised by their secretive plays. While monsoon is great for most animals and city zoo is having increasing number of visitors every weekend, special care is must for hoofed ruminant mammals forming the family Cervidae or in simple words, deer family.
“Black leg or black quarter is an acute infection that is highly fatal, bacterial disease of cattle, it affects all hoofed animals i.e. including all the species of deer family, sheep, goats, and of course the popular species nilgai or blue bull among other species of cattle family,” Dr Uttam Yadav, city zoo in-charge said.
It is soil-borne infection which generally occurs during rainy season. “In India, the disease is sporadic (1-2 animal) in nature, so we have to ensure that every hoofed animals stays away from the infection,” Yadav said.
In order to ensure that animals do not suffer from it, he administers application of limestone to hoofs of all such animals once a week on Mondays. “We have been quite lucky as all the hoofed animals are rather enjoying monsoons and healthy,” Yadav said.
With exception to lions, which are hydrophobic, most animals are active and in their best moods in monsoons. This is the perfect time to see the fun side of tigers and other wild cats as they jump in ponds and interact with their surroundings.

Swans are the largest extant members of the waterfowl family Anatidae, and are among the largest flying birds. Indore has a pair one of the largest species of swans, i.e. mute swan. These swans can reach a length of over 1.5 metre and weigh over 15 kilogram.
A pair of black swan, which is often defined as an unpredictable event in literature, because of their extreme rarity has its little home in Indore city zoo. The majestic pair brought to city zoo last year is not only enjoying but looks in a celebratory mood in their first monsoon in Indore this year.
The species is mainly found in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia.
Chuffing tigers of the Tiger state of India
The grand Bengal tigers highest have the highest population in city among all the zoos in the state. Monsoon is one of their favourite seasons. One can easily catch a tiger chuffing or enjoying the ponds during the season. This is the best time to interact with the species. Indore currently has 7 tigers.
Notorious bears
It looks like an adventure park at the bear enclosure as bears tend to enjoy every slope as slide and jump into the water any chance they get. The bears are notorious, even bothersome for zoo administrations, but cuddly and loving. One can enjoy all the colours of bear’s unique personality during rains.

Much of their time is spent preening, biting and working their feathers with their long bills, as well as rubbing the oil glands on the sides of their heads on back plumage.
