Need for power efficient designs for smart home & world

As the operating frequency has increased in VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) designs, engineers are required to prepare the designs to be more power saving as well, which is possible by the use of renewable energy resources and utilisation of natural energy sources in environment. This was explained by Dr SV Tokekar, Director of IET DAVV in his inaugural address at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science on Monday.
He inaugurated a free six-day short term training programme on ‘Design and Development of System on chip-using low power VLSI’ for educators of different technical universities of MP and other states.
Around 100 participants from different part of the state have come for the training program and attended the session.
“Power consumption was neglected due to low device density and low operating frequency but now it important issue due to high device density, high operating frequency, demand of portable consumer electronics, concerns on environmental and energy sources,” Tokekar said.
He explained that the limited battery lifetime typically imposes very strict demands on the overall power consumption of the portable system. “The need for low-power design is also becoming a major issue in high-performance digital systems, such as microprocessors, digital signal processors (DSPs) and other applications,” Tokekar said.
Prof Dr Santosh Vishwakarma from IIT Indore explained the concept of smart home with the use of IOT in modern world of automation. “System on a chip (SoC) combines the required electronic circuits of various computer components onto a single, integrated chip (IC),” he said.
SOC includes both the hardware and software, uses less power, has better performance, requires less space and is more reliable than multi-chip systems. “Most system-on-chips today come inside mobile devices like smart phones and tablets,” Vishwakarma said.
Prof Preet Jain gave expert talk on optimization techniques for low power design methodology on FPGA (field-programmable gate array).
Other experts from IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and Industries will also address the students and share their knowledge during the training program.
