Anti-CAA protests in Khajrana, Chandan Nagar, Azad Nagar, Bombay Bazaar, Sadar Bazaar: Over 10,000 Muslims take to streets




Over 10,000 members of Muslim community took to streets in the city on Monday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Carrying placards and raising slogans, protesters that included religious heads of different Muslim communities, demanded that the union government scrap CAA and NRC.
Most people who staged protest were either students or professionals from different fields. A few people associated with different organisations had also come to register protest against the citizenship law.
Protesters came together in Bombay Bazaar, Chandan Nagar, Sadar Bazaar, Khajrana and Azad Nagar, which are city’s Muslim predominant areas. Half- day bandh was observed in Khajrana as Muslims pressed for their demands.
Idris Mansuri, president of Muslims’ association, headed the protest along with Zaid Pathan, Ayaz Baig, Haji Shakeel Mansuri, Naushad Ahmed, Riaz Niyazi, Shakil Ata and Rashid Ali.
A memorandum addressed to President was submitted at collectorate. The memorandum stated that CAA aims to fast-track citizenship for persecuted Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from Muslim-majority Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. “But it does not protect Muslims. Hence it is against human rights,” the memorandum stated. It further said that United Nations is of the view that amendment will end equality guaranteed to all Indians in the Constitution.  
The protesters said CAA violates Article 14 of the Constitution and impinges on very ideals of their freedom struggle.
“CAA is a conspiracy to divide people on the basis of religion and it creates disunity among Indians,” the memorandum said. It further said that CAA allows Muslims to abandon their faith and adopt other religions to save their citizenship. 
“It is divisive and unconstitutional act. We have heard that it will be implemented with NRC,” the memorandum added. Citing Assam example, it noted that 19 lakh people have been excluded from NRC. 
Adding that Muslims have stayed in India for thousands of years, the memorandum said CAA is against the spirit of religious multiplicity and tolerance.
