The 22-year-old efforts to install the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Sikh community in Indore, were finally successful, as the state was inaugurated on Sunday.
The Sher-e-Punjab statue unveiled after long efforts. The unveiling will the bronze (metal) statue is built like a statue in the Maharaja's palace in France.
Sikh community members had been trying for the statue since 1999, during the tenure of the then Chief Minister Digvijay Singh. Earlier the statue was proposed to be installed at Bhanwarkuan square but administration had said that the place was not suitable for the road.
After this it was decided to place it on the rotary opposite Udham Singh Chowk of Rajiv Gandhi circle.
The idol has been built by the sculptor Prabhatray and his team in Gwalior. Prabhatraya explains that a similar statue is also installed in the Maharaja's palace in France.
“Four officials including Bibi Jagirgour, chairman of the Gurudwara Management Committee, attended the inauguration,” Manjit Singh Bhatia, chairman of Shri Guru Singh Sabha, said.
To pay respect to Saint Baba Tara Singh, three-day annual event was organised at Khalsabagh Gurudwara from Friday. The three-day event ‘Gurumat Samagam’ where sikh community members participated in large numbers, concluded on Sunday.
Community spokesperson Devendra Singh Gandhi said, “Tara Singh was a champion of Sikh rights against the dominant Hindus, Muslims, and British.” He added that Singh was born a Hindu, but as a student in Rawalpindi he became attracted to Sikhism and underwent the required initiation ceremony.
