Due to coronavirus second wave, city zoo was shutdown and so were many events. Hence, to celebrate world sparrow day on Saturday, Indore city zoo conducted various activities online.
About 1500 entries were received from all over India for various competitions.
World Sparrow Day, World Forest Day and World Water Day are celebrated on 20-21-22 March respectively.
Quiz based on these topics was conducted online in which about 600 people participated.
Along with this, the NEST Making Workshop was also conducted in which participants were told about how to make nest for birds and protocols to atteact birds in theee boxes.
Nest boxes were made from old plywood for small birds. Around 200 people participated.
Third competition was Tshirt Painting Competition in which students as well as elders participated. Save sparrows was the subject of the competition. After this, all the Tshirts will be distributed among needy by volunteers . "We got around 200 Tshirts," Aishani Jain, NGO ARPF coordinator, said.
The fourth competition was Selfie with Nest Box, in which people took selfies with their own Nest Box.
Around 100 people participated in this competition.
The aim of celebrations was to create awareness among people about sparrows and small birs conservation through these competitions. "Many people think that Sparrows are getting extinct whereas sparrows are actually migrating from the city to the villages," Jain said.

Sparrow populations have declined due to rapid urbanization, degradation of ecological resources for livelihood, high levels of pollution.
In homes, ventilators have been replaced with AC. Decorative plants and flowering shrubs have been replaced with local trees, making it impossible for birds to build nests.
Another reason is replacement by other avian species. The growing and aggressive nature of pigeons has also reduced the number of Sparrows.Sparrows eat insects. Before urbanization, sparrows were considered farmer's best friend, eating all the insects in the farmland .In the first 15 days after birth, host(sparrow baby) is dependent on the fresh insect larva which it devours.
The results of these events will be announced on World Water Day on 22 March 2021.
