Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the new assessment and evaluation practices for the new academic session 2021-22.
The evaluation criteria, released on April 22, details further changes in accordance to the board’s move to Competency Based Education or CBE.
While the same has been in implementation since 2019, the board has been gradually shifting the focus and making smaller changes to make the transition gradual.
In the letter written to the heads of all CBSE affiliated schools, the board has laid out the changes for the new academic session.
Going a step forth from this year, the board would now be introducing Competency Based Questions (CBQ). This would be about 30% for Classes IX & X and 20% for Classes XI & XII.
These competency based questions could be in the form of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Case Based Questions (CCBQ), Course Based integrated questions (CBIQ) or any other types.
Apart from these, the board would continue with Objective Type questions as well as Short and Long Answer Type questions (SLA). The weight of the same is tabulated below for the two classes.

In comparison, till 2020-21 session, for classes IX and X, the breakup included MCQs at 20%, CBQs at 20% and 60% SLA.
Similarly, for Classes XI and XII, the break up included 20% MCQs, 10% CCBQ and 70% SLAs.
Schools, in accordance, have been advised to prepare the students in regards the changes as defined. The board would in turn would also be releasing sample papers on its official website in due course of time.
Meanwhile, the board is yet to decide on the evaluation and assessment parameters for CBSE Class X Board Exams 2021, which were cancelled due to the pandemic.
Also, the decision on the CBSE Class XII Board Exams 2021 (on dates) would be taken after review in the first week of June.
