Once again, to beat corona second wave women self-help groups are ready to charge up and take an action.
The women who had prepared masks and sanitizers at economic cost, will now teach and advocate various corona protocols among rural areas and some urban areas in Indore and throughout the state.
To bring awareness among the citizens, especially in rural areas about Corona, the Central and State Government have fielded these women.
MP State Livelihood Mission has trained the women of these groups in the last one week, who will now teach villagers the new way of living to beat the spread of coronavirus in the state. Corona infection continues to spread like wildfire with increasing cases rapidly in the state.
There are bad conditions in urban areas and the transition has started spreading in rural areas as well. In such a situation, women of self-help groups have been entrusted with the responsibility.
The mission produced the first master trainers, who trained these women. During this, they were informed about the suggestions, protocols and necessary information given by World Health Organization regarding corona.
They were told that corona infection could be avoided by wearing a mask, keeping a distance of two yards, frequently washing hands with soap for at least half a minute.
Mission Managing Director ML Belwal said that Corona has imparted awareness about vaccination, proper infection practices, health insurance, health funded schemes, communication about the spread of infection, prevention and ways to increase immunity.
SHG women
Earlier, in over 90 percent of India’s districts, away from the limelight of the cities, SHG women produced facemasks, running community kitchens, delivering essential food supplies, sensitizing people about health and hygiene and combating misinformation.
Now, the same activity has begun with major focus on awareness drives and immunity building exercises. India’s SHG movement has evolved from small savings and credit groups that sought to empower poor rural women, into one of the world’s largest institutional platforms of the poor. Today, 67 million Indian women are members of 6 million SHGs.
SHGs taking up the challenge
In an official statement from World Bank, Gayatri Acharya said, “The women’s movement that started as a leap of faith some 15 years ago has proved to be an invaluable resource in these difficult times. Our partnership with the Indian government in building social capital among the rural poor has paid off in spades.”
She leads the World Bank’s $750 million support for India’s National Rural Livelihoods Mission. NRLM is India’s flagship program to reduce poverty by mobilizing poor rural women into self-help groups and building community institutions of the poor.
In the first wave of coronavirus, the SHGs rose to the extraordinary challenge of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.
