Madhya Pradesh: Black Tiger & White Tigress: The rare royal wildcats arrive at Kamla Nehru Zoological Museum, i.e. City Zoo Indore
Over 48 hours of travelling from Odisha to Indore, the two most awaited tigers: a black tiger and a white tigress reached Indore on Thursday afternoon around 5 pm.
They were welcomed with delicious lunch consisting of various animal feeds. Other than the two wildcats, four phigent i.e. a pair of silver and a pair of golden phigents also arrived in Indore city zoo.
Further, three ghariyals were also received in the exchange.
Kamla Nehru Zoological Museum received a white tiger from Nandan Kanan, Odisha on Thursday. It was initially estimated to be received on Wednesday.
City zoo was all set with the enclosure being built for tigers. Black Tigers are, like White Tigers, not a unique subspecies. Rather, they are Bengal Tigers with what is known as pseudo-melanism. Pure melanism refers to a large amount of black pigmentation of the hair / fur / feathers, eyes, and so on.
City zoo in-charge Dr Uttam Yadav said that soon the visitors of the city will be able to see the black tiger. It has white stripes on its body.
“While animal lovers in Indore would have thronged at city zoo for the arrival of the tigers, they cannot do so due to coronavirus,” Yadav said. However, the city zoo is hoping to make the most of this time by taking extra care of the new members.
The white coloured stripes on the tiger cause genetic error. This rare species of tiger is found only in Odisha in India.
The 2020 tiger census report states that the number of black-striped tigers is declining at a rapid pace.
City zoo authorities have also sent a proposal to acquire a melanistic tiger, and a king cobra before the corona pandemic. Work is underway to add more than five animal species including some exotic ones to its population within the next three to four months.
“We had sent proposals to Hyderabad, and Trivandrum for exchange of a pair of white tigers with some of our zoo inmates as well earlier. We had sent a similar proposal and had also been sent to Bilaspur zoo, as they also have an extra of white tiger,” said Yadav. He added that however, the exchange was finalised with Nandan Kanan in Odisha a while ago.
“Population of these tigers is extremely low and we had the white tigress at the city zoo in 2016,” Yadav said. After five years, Indore will again be home to white tigress. The tigress is 8 year old.
“The last white tigress of Indore Zoo, Shivani died on February 7, 2016 at the age of six due to kidney, liver and heart failure,” Yadav said.
A pair of lions and wolves were given in exchange for white and black tigers. The melanistic black male tiger is four years old.
This tiger holds a special identity due to the black stripes present on its body. This rare species of tiger is found only in Odisha in India.
