Indore city zoo: protecting exotic birds, animals and wildcats from possible infections with immunity boosters

As not just humans but also infections among animals are on the rise, Kamla Nehru Prani Sanghralaya is working to boost immunity of animals especially exotic animals brought from various other countries. Special prevention measures including changes in diet are also enforced for wild animals especially wild cats.

City zoo is famous for having the highest population of wildcats, i.e. lions and tigers in the country. Hence, their protection is of prime importance for authorities.

To support their immunity, medicines are given to exotic animals, exotic birds and wild animals.

For birds, protection of eyes is of prime importance. Hence, medicine is put in their eyes to prevent them from overheating and contracting any kind of infection. This is also done so that their immunity to fight diseases and weather changes boosts.

All the medicines are given under supervision of veterinarians. The cages are also sanitized regularly.

Although no such infection has been detected in any bird yet, but Indore Zoo has taken this initiative to keep vigil.

Over 250 exotic birds, protection must

Over 250 birds of 22 species live in the bird aviary at Indore Zoo. Many birds of exotic species were brought from other countries to be a part of this aviary. The bird house built is at 980 sq ft in the zoo. The cost of preparing this bird aviary is about Rs 1.5 crore.

Birds from South Africa, America and Australia have been residing here. Further, Golden Finches, three pairs of Macaw Hyacinth, Goffin cockatoo, Sulfur crest cockatoo bird will come to be a part of this aviary soon.

To protect Iguana, its food is washed with salt water.

Zoo management is working to protect creeping organisms as well. The world's largest lizard named iguana is being given green vegetables in the morning and evening.

Spinach and tomatoes are given in combination to boost its immunity. These vegetables are not kept in the cage for an extended period of time due to risk of contracting infection.

In the morning, they are given the vegetables after washing it with salt water. The iguanas are up to 3 meters long and can weigh up to 50 kg.

It is found in the continents of North and South America. It is also reared in domestic form due to its calm and radiant nature.

Forest feel for animals due to lockdown

City zoo in-charge Uttam Yadav said, “Zoo management is already on alert from Corona. All employees have been provided with corona protection items including masks, gloves and face shields. At the same time, they have been strictly asked to enter the zoo and wear masks and gloves to sanitize the staff at the time of entry and development. Not only this, doctors are monitoring the food given to animals, birds and wildlife.”

Zoo premises and cages for animals are sanitized twice in a day to protect them from any possible infection. Due to Janta curfew, the zoo remains rather stranded and quiet throughout the day, except for the employees.

“This makes the wildlife feel like they are in a forest. At the same time, the atmosphere has also become better with lesser pollution,” Yadav said.
