Kamla Nehru Prani Sanghralaya (Indore city zoo) has confirmed an exchange with Haryana to change bloodline of lions. Indore city zoo is known for the highest number of lions and best breeding centre of wildcats in the country.
One of the main reason for Indore to able to achieve that position is proper care and control of any kind of inbreeding.
“Inbreeding in any animals just like humans can result in genetic problems and is never regarded correct scientifically,” Dr Uttam Yadav, city zoo in-charge, said. He added that the population of lions has been blooming in Indore.
“However, we are getting restrained in terms of bloodline in the next generation,” Yadav said. Hence, the officials planned to exchange a lion and bring in new bloodline.
“We sent out proposals to various zoos across the country and could find a compatible exchange possibility with Bhiwani city zoo in Haryana,” Yadav said.
With the exchange confirmed at both the ends, the papers of exchange were signed recently. “We will be planning the transfer of lions soon, as we see the opportunity,” Yadav said.
Who is going to Haryana?
A young lion named Shiva will be heading to Haryana for the exchange. Shiva is four year old and healthy. Shiva is among the latest generations of lions at city zoo. He has younger siblings too. However, he is in his prime, which makes him one of the best choices for exchange.
Inbreeding in animals
Inbreeding is technically defined as the mating of animals more closely related than the average relationship within the breed or population concerned. For practical purposes, if two mated individuals have no common ancestor within the last five or six generations, their progeny would be considered outbreds
