P-restigious was this nation of mine,
A-t the hands of those with deficit spine.
R-etarded was what they heard at every mile,
A-nguish was in their heart but they kept a smile.
L-uminous was the fate of my nation,
Y-ears after, making a celebration.
M-edals from various stances,
P-rocuring was the country at these hands.
I-ndia, India was the chant everywhere,
C-redit to the saviours fighting with a dazzling glare.
With 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals, the 2021 Summer
Paralympics marked India's biggest haul in the medal race.
Placing it on the 24th rank amongst 163 nations.
From table tennis to long jump to discus and javelin, Indians did indeed prove that they do not need an arm or a leg to bring pride to their nation, not once or twice but 19 times our national flag was hoisted up high.
"The human spirit is one of ability, perseverance, and courage that no disability can steal away” says AvaniLekhara, a 19 year old Indian athlete who made a courageous stand amongst 163 nations when she fired her way to clinch the gold medal for the 1st time in Indian history. She is nothing but an epitome of how disability is just a matter of slant.
Following her, Krishna Nagar, SumitAntil, Nishad Kumar and 13 other athletes stepped up the podium to change the perception of 1.3 billion citizens when they decipher someone as anything less of them, when they call a person 'retarded', when they believe their superiority over a better mental, physical or social state.
Although 6 years back Indians were ignorant of the pride brought to them at the hands of those they considered 'less', today we as a nation need to acknowledge those crystals, for whom fragility was not their weakness but their fineness, we as a nation should boast these Paralympians who have adorned India in Gold, Silver and Bronze.
