11k applications for 12k seats; reserved RTE seats to remain vacant Expect fee hike, as MPBSE schools struggle to stay afloat
About 11,000 applications against 12,000 seats reserved under Right to Education Act (RTE) in Indore. Even if all the applicants take up admissions, there were still 1,000 seats that remain vacant. However, schools cannot fill up these seats, as the act prohibits filling up these seats and blocks them for the special admission.
On the plus side, the number of applications is actually up by 1,000. Last year, the number of applicants that were considered for admissions was 10,000 in Indore, while the number of blocked seats was still 12,000.
The situation for most private schools, especially the ones affiliated to Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) is tough. Most MPBSE schools in Indore almost drowned in debt and struggled to even stay afloat during lockdown and online classes.
Now, with another 1,000 seats remaining vacant, it will be an added pressure on schools. This pressure will be transferred to parents via fee hikes.
Applications down from 15K to 11K in verification
Sharing details of RTE process in Indore, district project coordinator (dpc) Akshay Singh Rathore said, “We originally received 15,000 applications for RTE seats in Indore.” He added that in sorting and short-listing, many applications were rejected.
“Lack of documents, error in verification, non-eligibility, etc were some reasons for rejecting the applications,” Rathore said. In all about 4,000 applications were rejected. Hence, about 75 per cent applications were accepted, i.e. 11,000.
Technical issues to blame, say schools
Most schools are getting pleas from parents for RTE admissions. “Many students are eligible and want admissions under RTE, but they struggle due to technical errors,” Gopal Soni, state vice president of association of MP board private unaided schools, said.
“Even after considerations, many parents and students had to go back, because of high number of technical errors like despite being a resident of Indore, the parent has BCL card of other district cards, SC/ST card issued in names of grandparents, etc.” Soni said.
First round of Lottery on July 14
First round of allotment of seats under RTE with lottery system will be on July 14. Lottery result will be announced in the later in the month of July.
According to RTE, 25% of the seats are reserved for underprivileged students in both the private and public sector schools.

From these 2.9 lakh seats, only 1.4 lakh seats were filled in the state in 2021. This means 1.5 lakh seats remained vacant despite being reserved under RTE for the academic session.
