Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, a R & D unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India celebrated the Birth Anniversary of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the Architect of the Indian Nuclear Programme, Monday as the “Homi Bhabha Day @ RRCAT-2023”. On this occasion, Dr CK Asnani, Chairman & Managing Director of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), Jaduguda was the chief guest.
Asnani delivered the "Homi Bhabha Day @ RRCAT Lecture”. The title of his talk was “Indian nuclear Program: in tandem with the strategy of the greatest visionary Dr. Homi J. Bhabha”.
In his lecture he presented the journey of DAE, from its inception to the present day, with a special emphasis on the role of Uranium, from its mining to the production of fuel pellets and their deployment in reactors.
The highlight of his lecture was the lucid manner in which he presented to the audience the three aspects of Nuclear Energy, namely, (i) Why to go for nuclear energy, (ii) How to achieve the desired energy security through nuclear energy route, and (iii) Where does India stand today and what needs to be done further.
An important event during the function was the "Transfer of Technologies" from RRCAT to the industrial partners through “AIC π–HUB” promoted by RRCAT, DAE. Four technologies related to Biophotonics were transferred to M/s Lord’s Mark Industries Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai.
These were: (i) OncoDiagnoScope, which is an optical spectroscopy based device for screening of oral cavity cancer, (ii) OncoVision, which is a vision enhancement module based on low-cost fluorescence imaging for in-vivo screening of malignant and potentially malignant lesions of human oral cavity, (iii) Raman Probe, which is meant for in-situ measurement of good quality Raman spectra from low Raman-active materials like biological tissues, and (iv) TuberCuloScope, which is a low-cost fluorescence imaging device for rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). The fifth technology transfer was for AgniRakshak, a Raman optical fiber based distributed temperature sensor system, which was transferred to M/s Alankar Cables Ltd., Delhi.
RRCAT director Dr Shankar V Nakhe presented the opening remarks in which he underlined the reasons behind celebrating the Homi Bhabha Day. He elaborated on the role of Dr. Homi J. Bhabha in conceptualizing and shaping the activities of the Department of Atomic Energy, right from mining of the Uranium ore to post-processing of the spent fuel and waste management. He gave glimpses of Dr. Bhabha’s multifarious personality, who was not just a scientist par excellence but also an avid nature lover.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Purushottam Shrivastava, Director, Proton Accelerator Group, RRCAT. The programme ended with collective signing of the National Anthem. The function was attended by the scientists of RRCAT and several eminent personalities of Indore.
