Stolen or Smuggled again? Confiscated sandal & teakwood missing from forest warehouse
Stolen, smuggled or just lost is the wondrous question bothering the forest department as confiscated teak and sandalwood vanished into thin air from Navratan Bagh Warehouse, Indore.
In a shocking incident on Sunday, when forest department officials checked the warehouse, teak and sandalwood was missing. The teak and sandalwood logs were confiscated by forest workers from smugglers in Indore, Mhow, Manpur and Choral range.
As the case was pending in the court, the responsibility of safekeeping of wood logs was entrusted with forest department. However, the department failed to safe-keep the said wooden logs even at their official warehouse of the district.
Missing of wooden logs will affect court proceedings as they were essential proof of the case. Hence, the department officials are panicking and have instructed quick investigations.
DFO Mahendra Singh Solanki instituted investigation, interrogated two forest workers and some employees in this regard. He also questioned some other possible suspects.
In a search operation, Solanki interrogated some suspects and searched their house. The goods kept in the warehouse were found at some houses, but there is no clarity issued on the same. The department is trying to suppress the entire matter, as it shows their negligence towards confiscated wooden logs.

Actually, the responsibility of Indore Forest Division Office Complex is with the Environment Branch. Here the warehouse, guest house and other accommodation are looked after by two to three forest workers.
DFO Solanki joined Indore’s forest team in October. In November, he issued instructions to vacate the warehouse and organise it in November. Teak ingots, sandalwood, saw cutters and vehicles seized during the operation were kept in the warehouse.
Besides, there were broken tables, chairs and iron boxes in the department. DFO asked to repair the broken tables and chairs and reuse them for office work.
Old files were to be kept in iron boxes in the store room being built behind the DFO office. Due to this, repair of these boxes was under process since last few months.
Recently, officials received information that some items were missing from the warehouse, which included some teak logs, sandalwood and saw cutters. Hence, DFO investigated the matter and the search for missing items is on.
