Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is unsure of conducting two board examinations and time-lines as it would require that entire syllabus to be completed by September, but a few schools in Indore seem in a rush as they will be conducting classes till May 10 for board classes.
With the cloud cover controlling the hiking summer temperatures, local administration might even allow that! However, this would hike the pressure on students and cut down their summer break shorter.
Board examinations have become a much more daunting time for students with the recent announcements from CBSE. Earlier, some schools conducted class 9 and class 11 exams in February and started board classes from March.
Taking an action against it, CBSE had sent out a circular stating, “Attempting to complete an entire year's worth of I coursework in a reduced timeframe poses risks for students who may get overwhelmed and struggle to keep up with the pace of the learning, leading to anxiety and burnout.”
Further, the board said, it little or no time to carry out extracurricular activities like life skills, value education, health and physical education, work education and community service. These activities are as important as academics, CBSE said.
The board asked all the affiliated schools to begin a new academic session only from April. Now, all the schools started the new session from April, but will stretch it further into May. Usually, all the schools are instructed to close down by April end as summer vacations begin from May.
This year, it will be different and still impose extra pressure and struggle to board students. “Though there is no official announcement from state education department or Indore collector, we expect that schools would be instructed to close by end of april,” Manglesh Vyas, district education officer, said.
“I am in class 10 now, and honestly, it is scary to prepare for board examinations,” Kanika Sharma, a student said. She added that her school would be conducting classes till May 10 as of now.
“Our teachers repeatedly inform us that the syllabus is a lot and we must complete it by September-October. Hence, classes are must in May and early June as well,” student Akanksha Motwani said.
“There is a lot of competition among schools and it’s important to prepare students for possibility of two boards, hence, some schools have taken the decision to run classes in May only for board students,” explained a teacher Khushboo Sukhija. She added that teachers are also under stress and must prepare students well for boards.
“It’s not a logical step to stress students and focus majorly on academic scores, but we end up with good marksheets, confused students and an unskilled workforce,” CBSE coordinator UK Jha said.
