Energy Conservation Day on Dec 14
Go Energy Efficient with windmill, recycling old wires, sandwich & enjoy trivia
TINA KHATRI
Let’s celebrate this Energy Conservation Day taking small steps that can have a big impact on the environment and our future.
We’ve put together some exciting projects you can try that will help you understand energy conservation while having fun. Whether it’s creating a Recycled Star Wire Ornament to brighten your holiday season, building a Homemade Windmill to see wind energy in action, or making a delicious and healthy Cucumber & Hummus Sandwich, each activity is a chance for you to learn and contribute to saving energy.

Recycled Star Wire Ornament
Materials Needed:
• Wire (craft or e-waste wire)
• Wire cutters
• Needle-nose pliers
• Beads, sequins, or glitter (optional)
• Ribbon or string (for hanging)
Steps:
1. Cut the Wire: Cut a piece of wire about 12-15 inches.
2. Form the Star: Bend the wire into a 5-pointed star. Twist the ends together to secure.
3. Create a Hanging Loop: Bend the top into a loop for hanging.
4. Add Decorations: Glue beads, sequins, or glitter for extra sparkle.
5. Attach Ribbon: Tie ribbon or string through the loop for hanging.
Tips:
• Use colored wire for a festive look.
• Add glitter or beads for extra sparkle.

Homemade Windmill
Materials Needed:
• Small DC motor (from an old toy or appliance)
• Cardboard (for windmill blades)
• Plastic bottle (for the base or frame)
• LED light (to demonstrate power generation)
• Wires (to connect the motor to the LED light)
• Scissors
• Tape or glue
• Drill or pin (to attach the motor to the frame)

Instructions:
1. Create the Windmill Blades:
• Cut 4 equal-sized blades from cardboard (about 3-4 inches long).
• Shape them like a rectangle or triangle, ensuring all blades are the same size for balance.
2. Attach the Blades to the Motor:
• Find the shaft of the DC motor (the small rod that spins).
• Attach the cardboard blades evenly around the motor's shaft. You can glue them in place, ensuring they are balanced so that the windmill will spin smoothly when the wind hits the blades.
3. Build the Frame:
• Take the plastic bottle and cut off the top to create a stable base for the windmill.
• Insert the motor into the opening of the bottle, securing it with tape or glue. Make sure the motor's shaft is pointing upwards.
4. Connect the Wires:
• Attach wires from the motor's terminals to the LED light.
• The wires should be connected to both the positive and negative terminals of the LED light. When the motor spins, it will generate small electrical power, enough to light the LED!
5. Test the Windmill:
• Place the windmill in front of a fan or outside on a windy day.
• Watch as the wind spins the blades, causing the motor to turn and power the LED light.

Cucumber & Hummus Sandwiches Recipe
Ingredients:
• 2 slices of whole wheat bread
• 1/4 cup hummus (store-bought or homemade)
• 1/2 cucumber (sliced thinly)
• Salt & pepper to taste
• A squeeze of lemon juice (optional)
• Fresh herbs (like parsley or mint) for garnish (optional)

Instructions:
1. Prepare the Bread: Lay out 2 slices of whole wheat bread on a clean surface.
2. Spread Hummus: Evenly spread about 2 tablespoons of hummus on one slice of bread. You can adjust the amount depending on how much hummus you prefer.
3. Add Cucumber: Thinly slice the cucumber and layer it on top of the hummus-covered bread. Arrange the slices to cover the entire slice.
4. Season: Sprinkle a little salt and pepper on top of the cucumber for added flavour. If you like, squeeze a little lemon juice over the cucumber slices for a fresh, tangy taste.
5. Assemble the Sandwich: Place the other slice of bread on top to form the sandwich.
6. Serve: Slice the sandwich in half (if desired) and serve immediately.
