CBSE students can switch to advanced Math from standard in Class 11
Students who took Basic Mathematics in Class 10 can now choose the advanced Standard Mathematics in Class 11 if their school confirms they are capable of handling it. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the relaxation as an important update regarding the eligibility of students for Mathematics courses in Class 11 starting from the academic year 2025-26.
Previously, students who studied Mathematics (Basic) (Code 241) in Class 10 were only allowed to opt for Applied Mathematics in Class 11, while students who took Mathematics (Standard) (Code 041) in Class 10 could continue with Mathematics (041) at the senior secondary level. However, due to the pandemic and other exceptional circumstances, CBSE had granted relaxation allowing students who took Mathematics (Basic) to also choose Mathematics (Standard) in Class 11.
Now, from the 2025-26 academic session onward, this relaxation will continue. This means students who have taken Mathematics (Basic) in Class 10 can opt for the more advanced Mathematics (Standard) course in Class 11, provided the school authorities assess and confirm that the student has the aptitude and ability to pursue this level of Mathematics successfully.
Dr. Sanyam Bardwaj Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations at CBSE, stated,
"We want to ensure that students have the flexibility to pursue Mathematics at a level that matches their skills and interests. This decision aims to empower students who showed potential in Mathematics (Basic) to challenge themselves further in Class 11."

Schools should carefully evaluate students who wish to switch from Mathematics (Basic) to Mathematics (Standard) in Class 11.
Once the subject is selected in the CBSE’s online system (LOC), changes will not be allowed.
This decision is valid until a new scheme of studies is introduced, following recommendations from the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).
All other conditions from the original circular dated 10 January 2019 will remain applicable.
The CBSE circular urges schools to inform students and parents promptly:
"It is important for schools to communicate this update clearly to parents and students to facilitate informed decision-making for the upcoming academic session," the circular reads.
This update offers greater flexibility for students to pursue higher-level Mathematics, encouraging academic growth and future opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
