From Cheesy Gratin to Dancing Pendulums—Weekend Time Shines!

By TINA KHATRI

This weekend, why not swap a little screen time for some hands-on magic? Imagine your kitchen smelling like golden, bubbling Cheesy Vegetable Gratin while your brain dances with geometry as a Popsicle Stick Harmonograph traces hypnotic patterns on paper.

As Bodhi Day on December 8 reminds us, even small sparks of curiosity can lead to big awakenings—just like Siddhartha under the sacred fig tree. Light a candle, try a new recipe, or experiment with your own pendulum art; every stir, push, or swing is a step toward discovery.

So grab your ingredients, sticks, and paper—let the weekend be your playground of taste, creativity, and wonder. Who knows? Between golden gratin bites and swirling harmonograph patterns, you might just discover a new favourite hobby… or a hidden talent!

🍽️ Recipe: Cheesy Vegetable Gratin (No-Stove Fire)

This comforting French-style casserole is the perfect winter warmer, relying only on your oven for a creamy, golden finish.

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 300g cauliflower florets
  • 350ml heavy cream
  • 150ml milk
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 150g Gruyère or cheddar cheese, grated
  • Salt, pepper, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp dried thyme

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C. Grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare Cream: Warm the cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and thyme in a microwave-safe bowl for 1.5 minutes, then stir well. Do not boil.
  3. Layer: Arrange half the potato slices in the dish. Layer with half the cauliflower. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cauliflower.
  4. Soak: Pour the warmed cream mixture evenly over the vegetables.
  5. Cheese & Bake (Covered): Sprinkle two-thirds of the grated cheese on top. Cover the dish tightly with foil.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes.
  7. Finish (Uncovered): Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese, and bake for another 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  8. Rest: Let the gratin sit for 10–15 minutes before serving.

🛠️ STEM Craft: Popsicle Stick Harmonograph

This device uses two swinging pendulums to draw geometric patterns, illustrating wave motion.

Materials:

  • 25+ Popsicle Sticks
  • Hot Glue
  • Cardboard Base
  • String
  • 2 Small Cups (Yoghurt Pots)
  • 2 Pens/Markers
  • Sand/Stones (for weight)
  • Small piece of paper

Instructions:

  1. Build Frame: Glue sticks into two tall, sturdy 'A-frame' towers on the cardboard base, separated by about 35 cm.
  2. Make Pendulums: Punch three holes around the rim of each cup. Tie string to the holes to form a harness above each cup.
  3. Hanging: Hang one cup (Pendulum 1) from the top of the first tower. Insert a pen into the cup bottom, tip down.
  4. Table: Tape a small piece of paper onto the bottom of the second cup (Pendulum 2). Hang it from the second tower.
  5. Set Up: Fill both cups halfway with sand/stones. Adjust string length so the pen just touches the paper.
  6. Draw: Gently push both pendulums in different directions and observe the pen tracing the complex geometric patterns as the swings decay.
