In a unique blend of tradition, sustainability, and hands-on learning, students from Acropolis Institute of Technology and Research and Devi Ahilya University discovered how to make natural Holi colors today at the Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development.

Learning to make Holi colors naturally

The workshop, part of a weeklong training program, focused on creating chemical-free, skin-safe, and eco-friendly colors. Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan demonstrated simple methods for preparing both dry and wet natural colors using everyday flowers, fruits, and plant extracts.

DIY Natural Holi Colors

  • 🔴 Red & Pink: Derived from fresh Beetroot extracts.
  • 🟠 Yellow & Orange: Extracted from Palash (Butea monosperma) flowers.
  • 🟣 Magenta & Purple: Created using Rose, Poi, and Bougainvillea.

Students gain hands-on experience

The workshop was highly interactive, with students actively mixing, straining, and experimenting with colors under expert supervision. Vineeta Shirdhonkar, faculty member at Acropolis Institute, shared that the session was completely practical, providing a step-by-step process of making colors from flowers and fruits.

"Natural colors are safe for the skin, easy to wash off, and environmentally friendly. By choosing natural ingredients, we can celebrate Holi joyfully while reducing the harmful impact of synthetic colors."

— Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan

Priyanshi Mandloi, MSW student from Devi Ahilya University, added: "What I loved most was seeing how small, thoughtful actions can create a big difference. This workshop motivates us to become more socially responsible professionals."

Promoting eco-friendly Holi in the community

The workshop concluded with a discussion on sustainable living and climate awareness. Over 50 students participated and pledged to:

  • Celebrate Holi using only natural, chemical-free colors.
  • Encourage peers and family to adopt safe and eco-friendly practices.
