Dubai author’s Indore visit ends in dispute with Shah Bano’s family; allegations of assault and recording dispute

A literary project between Dubai-based aspiring author Parveen Banu and the family of Shah Bano ended in a public dispute, with Banu alleging financial coercion and assault, while the family raised concerns over an unapproved recording.

Background of the Project

Banu approached the family through Tousif Warsi, an advocate representing Shah Bano’s family, via LinkedIn. The project was intended to document the family’s history and its connection to the landmark Shah Bano case. Banu traveled from Dubai to Mumbai on February 13, reaching Indore the following day.

Chronology of Conflict:

  • Financial Tension: Banu alleges the family demanded ₹25 lakh upfront and 30% of global sales at an Old Palasia office.
  • The Recording: After two hours of interviews in Khajrana, tensions peaked over a recording Banu had made.
  • Public Chaos: Banu alleges she fled the house and was surrounded by a crowd after being labeled a "Bacha-Chor" (Child Thief).

Allegations of Assault

Outside the Khajrana residence, the situation deteriorated. “I was pushed, slapped, and kicked, and stolen from,” Banu alleged. While Banu claims the crowd shouted "Bacha-Chor," local residents later suggested the term used may have been "Data-Chor" (Data Thief), referring to the unapproved recordings.

Police Intervention & Resolution

Khajrana police intervened to stop the chaos. Banu’s lawyer confirmed she was asked to pay ₹2 lakh at the station in connection with the unapproved recording. Sources close to the family say this reflected concerns over potential legal complications regarding the data.

Banu reportedly submitted a written statement at the station agreeing not to pursue further legal action. The lawyer defending Shah Bano's family, as well as the family themselves, declined to comment on Banu's specific claims.

Current Status:

Khajrana police officials confirmed the conflict and noted that both parties reached a mutual resolution at the station. Banu has expressed intent to pivot the experience into a novel.
