Natural Holi Training at Sanawadiya

The weeklong Natural Colours for Happy Holi training programme concluded with a meaningful and inspiring closing ceremony at the Jimmy McGilligan Centre. The initiative was conducted by Padma Shri Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan to promote eco-friendly Holi celebrations and sustainable living practices.

🎥 WATCH: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TRAINING

The ceremony commenced with a Saraswati Vandana performed by students of Gujarati Arts & Law College, followed by a Baha’i prayer for unity across the earth. Adding a cultural touch to the occasion, a student from Arunabh Autism School narrated the mythological story of Prahlad and Holika.

Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan, fondly known as Janak Didi, welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. Prateek Shrivastav, Editor-in-Chief of Digiana News and Professor at Gujarati College, along with faculty members and students. Guests were greeted with a traditional natural tilak prepared from sindoor and parijaat flowers.

Practical Training on Making Natural Holi Colours

“The purpose of my life is to convey my gratitude to God, who created me as a human being to sustain all His creations. I celebrate every occasion and festival wholeheartedly while respecting and protecting nature. Since becoming a resident of Sanawadiya village 15 years ago, I have organised a weeklong training programme before Holi each year so that everyone can celebrate a beautiful, healthy and happy Holi.”

— Dr. Janak Palta McGilligan

Participation included students from Devi Ahilya University (DAVV), Rotaract members from Acropolis, Prestige Institute of Management (PIMR), IATV School, and the villagers of Sanawadiya.

Demonstration of Eco-Friendly Colour Preparation

In an engaging hands-on session, students witnessed the chemistry of nature:

  • 🎨 Vibrant Orange: Prepared by pouring hot water over Palash (Tesu) flower petals.
  • 🎨 Magenta: Prepared from Poi leaves and beetroot extract.
  • 🎨 Dry Gulal: Made from dried Bougainvillea, ambadi petals, and citrus peels.

Dr. McGilligan emphasized that these colours are safe for human health and the environment, cautioning against chemical dyes that contaminate water and soil.

Chief Guest’s Inspiring Address

Chief Guest Dr. Prateek Shrivastav expressed profound gratitude for Janak Didi's selfless service to hundreds of villages in Jhabua and Alirajpur, for which she was conferred the Padma Shri.

“Today, I urge all students to step away from the virtual world of mobile phones and dedicate their lives to saving the environment. Didi has taught us that life is not merely about acquiring, but about living in harmony with nature. We pledge to celebrate Holi this year and in the future in an eco-friendly way.”

— Dr. Prateek Shrivastav

The weeklong programme concluded with a collective resolve to celebrate Holi responsibly and to promote sustainable living practices within the community and beyond.
